How to get from Grecia to Monteverde by bus?

Are you starting your Costa Rica trip at Mangífera Hostel in Grecia and planning to continue to Monteverde? Taking the bus is a convenient option, and the good news is that there is a direct bus connection from Grecia to Monteverde.

Below, we explain step by step how to travel from Grecia to Monteverde by bus, including where to book your ticket, where to catch the bus in Grecia, and what time you should be at the bus stop.

Step 1: Book your bus ticket from San José to Monteverde

The bus service to Monteverde is operated by Transmonteverde. Although you will board the bus in Grecia, you need to book the San José – Monteverde route because the bus starts its journey in San José and picks up passengers along the way.

Go to Transmonteverde on your smartphone. The website does not always work properly on a computer.

Step 2: Enter your travel information

When booking your ticket, enter the following information:

• Origin City: San José

• Available Route: 675 San José – Monteverde

• Destination City: Monteverde

• Boarding City: Grecia

• Select your travel date

• Select your travel time

  
  

  There are currently two buses per day:

• 6:30 AM

• 2:30 PM

  
  

  Important: These are the departure times from San José

  The times shown above are not the times when the bus arrives at the bus stop in Grecia. They are the times when the bus leaves San José.

  We recommend being at the bus stop in Grecia approximately 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time from San José:

  
  

• For the 6:30 AM bus → be at the bus stop around 7:00 AM

• For the 2:30 PM bus → be at the bus stop around 3:00 PM

  
  

  The bus may arrive a little later, as it has to travel from San José to Grecia. However, it is much better to arrive early than to risk missing the bus.

  
  

  After entering your information, fill in your personal details, choose your seat and pay for your ticket. We also recommend taking a screenshot of your booking confirmation in your browser.

  
  

  You should receive a confirmation email with your e-ticket. If you don't receive the confirmation email within an hour after paying, contact the bus company directly.

  
  

  Step 3: Confirm your reservation with the bus company

  We recommend calling Transmonteverde after booking to confirm that your reservation has been received.

  
  

  This is particularly useful because the bus will pick you up along the highway in Grecia, rather than at a traditional bus terminal. Calling ahead allows you to confirm that the driver knows you will be boarding in Grecia.

  
  

  You can find the bus company's telephone number on the e-ticket you receive by email.

  
  

  Step 4: Get to the bus stop in Grecia

  The bus stop for the Grecia to Monteverde bus is not in the center of Grecia.

  It is located at the exit from Grecia toward Highway 1 (Ruta 1).

  From Mangífera Hostel, it takes approximately 15 minutes to get to the bus stop by car.

  
  

  Option 1: Uber or taxi

  The easiest option is to take an Uber or red taxi.

  In Uber, you can search for “Monumento Griego”:

  
  

  Tell the driver that you need to go to the bus stop for the Monteverde bus on the highway.

  
  

  Option 2: Local bus

  You can also take the local bus toward San José and ask the driver to let you off at Monumento Griego.

  
  

  The bus to San José leaves approximately every 30 minutes from this bus station.

  The bus station is only about 150 meters from Mangífera Hostel.

  
  

  Since bus schedules can change, we recommend checking the current timetable directly at the bus station. If you travel by local bus, allow approximately 30 minutes to reach the Monteverde bus stop, including the journey and waiting time.

  
  

  A small stop along the way

  Just so you know, the bus normally makes a stop at a “soda” along the way. In Costa Rica, a soda is a small local restaurant where you can find traditional Costa Rican food and refreshments.
